PORCELAIN CROWNS
Dental crowns are most often used to restore teeth when a tooth is fractured or when there is insufficient tooth structure left to restore the tooth with a filling.
There are different types of porcelain crowns available, including porcelain to gold, porcelain to zirconia, all porcelain, all zirconia, and our newest material EMAX™. Dr. Jaksa will advise you which material is best for your situation.
EMAX™ is our new favorite material providing both excellent strength and esthetics. We find this a better choice than all porcelain crowns, which have excellent esthetics but poor strength. All porcelain crowns were traditionally used only on anterior teeth because of strength issues. EMAX crowns can be used on all teeth.
Porcelain to zirconia crowns (Lava™) is another choice. This crown offers excellent fit, strength and esthetics. It is technology from 3M™ – ESPE™. The crown has a zirconia coping which fits to the tooth. This is important for strength and fit. Porcelain is then added to the zirconia coping understructure. Lava™ crowns were introduced several years ago, and Dr. Jaksa has been involved since their inception.
Dental crowns are considered long-term restorations if meticulously and correctly placed. The margin between the restoration or dental crown and the tooth must have a perfect seal.
PORCELAIN VENEERS
Porcelain veneers are micro-thin porcelain restorations permanently placed on the front of a tooth. They can result in excellent esthetics and durability if used in the correct situation and properly placed. Veneers can be used to change tooth shape in the case of irregularity, tooth color, tooth position in the case of gaps or crowding, tooth contour if there are inconsistencies.

We now have new choices in dental materials such as EMAX™, all zirconia, and porcelain to zirconia which greatly improve esthetics. The dental bridge is permanently attached to the prepared teeth, and if properly placed, can offer beautiful esthetics and durability. The restoration can be completed in two appointments.
WHY CHANGE A DENTAL CROWN
It matters very much who does your dentistry. Porcelain restorations, when placed, need to fit perfectly. If porcelain restorations fit poorly, so that bacteria can get underneath, they will fail quickly. All the decay in the tooth must be removed before crown placement. Again, if this is not done, porcelain restorations will fail. Dr. Jaksa is meticulous about your restorations fitting correctly so that they will last for years. Correctly placed porcelain restorations may last 20-30+ years, while poorly placed porcelain restorations can fail immediately.
